Welsh Terriers
The Welsh terrier is one of the many terrier breeds that is suited for hunting of as serving as a pet. Up until the early 1900s it was called the Old English terrier but Wales is the first to register it with the kennel clubs so the name was changed to the Welsh terrier.
In many ways the Welsh terrier resembles the Airedale terrier or the fox terrier. They have a wiry coat and a boxy nose that always has whiskers, even for the female. They generally are tan on the head, legs, and underbelly but the saddle is usually black. They are sturdy, but compact and will weigh from 20 to 22 pounds. Welsh terrier puppies usually have their tail docked when they are only a few days old. They have an undercoat that protects them from harsh weather and dirt. Welsh terrier puppies are generally born all black and they change colors as they mature. Sometimes they will retain their all black coat for up to a year.
Welsh terriers are rambunctious and love to play. They can generally outlast their master when running but are just as happy playing tug of war. They are affectionate and will gladly kiss you when they are pleased and most would prefer to sleep curled up next to you in the bed.
If you are looking for a family dog then Welsh terrier for sale or the Welsh terrier puppies for sale is what you are looking for, as they are family oriented dog that loves to travel with you in the car. They possess a very high intelligence and are known to think things through before they act upon them. They have been known to get thoroughly engrossed in watching a television show that features dogs. They also are very fond of playing with toys.
Welsh terriers are typical when it comes to the terrier breed. They can have an image of themselves as being big and mighty or they can make good and devoted pets. They do not tend to be timid or shy but do often display assertiveness. Seldom will they back down from a fight, even if the aggressor is twice their size. Allowing them to chase cats or some other animal will help them expend some energy so that when they are in the house they will be calmer. The females usually get along well with other dogs but the male may tend to be the alpha dog and want to dominate other dogs in the family.
Welsh terriers usually get along well with children and love to romp and play all day long. Supervision is recommended since the Welsh terrier might get a bit rambunctious and cause a small child to fall.
Because of their high energy level, the active Welsh terrier is generally healthy and durable. Some may be predisposed to glaucoma but this is the exception rather than the rule. On average they will live from 12 to 13 years and will stay active and alert all of their lives.
