Xoloitzcuintlis
The Xoloitzcuintli, sometimes better known as the Mexican Hairless dog, is not the most attractive dog to look at for some. However, others like the hairless look, and the Xoloitzcuintli is the perfect breed for those kinds of people to get. The breed itself can be a little hard to handle for first time dog owners. Today we are going to talk about why that is, and see if Xoloitzcuintlis are still a breed that you might want to think about getting. Do keep in mind, before you set your heart on getting the Xoloitzcuintli, they can be hard to find. In fact, unless you live in or around Mexico, then Xoloitzcuintli puppies can be a pain in the butt to get your hands on! Now let's talk a little bit more in depth about their personalities.
When you first see any Xoloitzcuintlis for sale or Xoloitzcuintli puppies for sale, you are going to think that they are loud and very unruly. That is because the puppies are. However, adult Xoloitzcuintlis are known for their calm demeanor. In fact, some people have said that they can be lazy. The reason why most people find these dogs hard to handle is because this is a dog that you are going to want to raise from a puppy. If you have never worked with dogs before, then the puppies can be more than a handful. Not only that, but the overall personality of this dog also tends to be kind of primitive. They do good with family members, but not so good with new people that they meet. If you get them young, it is very important that you do socialization early in their life. In fact, you are going to want to do it almost everyday for the first few weeks of its life. This is the best way for this dog to get used to being around people.
Not only can they be hard to handle because of the way they act around people they do not know, but Xoloitzcuintlis are also known to be escape artists. They can jump fences and and climb almost anything. Most of the time, they do this so that they can give chase to smaller animals. Xoloitzcuintlis do make great guard dogs, however, because they will never back down from a fight. Even if they are outnumbered, they will still fight. If you just want this to be your normal, everyday house dog, then you might need to spend some money on training so that the dog starts to be a little bit more friendly.
For the most part, if you can teach the dog to be nice to new people and keep them in your yard, then this is a great dog to own. Some say that they are lazy, but it really depends on the owner of the dog. This is a dog that will get up and play, but they only like to play with people, meaning that you have to actually get up and go out there with the dog. For some people, who work a lot, this is a bad thing.
