Dog Associations
You've heard of places where you'll find dogs - shelters, puppy mills, dog rescue shelters, etc...and then there are also hundreds of homes where you'll find your furry friends. However, there are other exclusive places where dogs are bred and trained to perform specific, useful roles in society - dog associations. We, as a society, are indebted to these associations, who, through their relentless efforts are providing specially trained dogs to perform several critical roles - locating people lost in remote areas, human remains, disaster victims and during search and rescue missions in water bodies, etc.
One such premier dog association is the American Rescue Dog Association (ARDA). There are also other places catering to a niche segment of the market i.e., dog breeder associations. Here owners and breeders of purebred dogs can register such dogs and litters. The incremental advantages of registering with such dog Associations include the education of members in responsible dog ownership, promotion of dog welfare and services that benefit dog owners and dog breeders alike. An association that has contributed significantly to these services since 1909, is the American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA). Although the ADBA initially registered only purebred, American Pit Bull Terriers, they later expanded to include the registration of other purebred dogs.
Today, the internet also has numerous websites dedicated to dog and other pet animal owners. This has led to the formation of large dog communities and forums who share volumes of information on the welfare of dogs. Most reputed dog associations have their own websites to further these goals. One such website owned by the Dog Breeders Association Limited, has a three point aim, in terms of benefits for its members viz.,
1) Provision of useful links and articles targeting both potential new puppy owners and dog breeders.
2) Opportunities for both, public and breeders to exchange ideas and receive advice from fellow dog lovers through discussions.
3) Search facilities for potential new puppy owners to select the most suitable breed for them and their families, via an extensive database.
This website is continuously updated year round and provides useful new information, advice and offers in order that members visit the site regularly and derive the maximum benefits available at the time of their visit. Society's needs are so varied in nature that it has led to the establishment of several other specialized dog associations. In bygone years, dogs were specifically trained for hunting, life stock herding and protection, as well as other basic roles, particularly, guarding farms, homes and other establishments.
Today however, dogs are performing specialized and critical tasks such as assisting police in law enforcement, specifically, in the chasing and holding of suspects or, detaining them merely with the threat of them being released. Other critical roles also include the detection of illicit drugs or explosives which a person may be carrying in their personal effects e.g., baggage, jacket, etc. It is no wonder that dogs have been credited with the title 'man's best friend', and taking into account all the other important roles that they continue to perform, dogs undoubtedly deserve a second major title - 'society's best friend'.
