Dog Diet

There are so many theories about the correct dog diet that the average dog owner gets completely confused about what the ideal healthy dog food for your dog or puppy should be. You buy the most expensive organic or designer dog food and find that your dog is turning fat or that he doesn't like the taste of it at all and doesn't eat it. It's all a question of trial and error. Take the recommendations of veterinarians and other dog lovers and try out their suggestions.

You will know you have hit bulls' eye when the dog food diet you try is gobbled up by your dog and he remains fit and fine after staying on this diet for some time. But while you experiment with the different dog diets, let us give you some basic ideas about what various types of food can do to your dog. You'd be surprised when we tell you about what is not good for your dog. Milk, for instance, is not a balanced diet for a dog, whatever may be its benefits for human children. Dogs should not be given this even as a substitute for water. As a matter of fact, consuming too much milk may cause a dog to get diarrhea. Similarly, raw eggs, which are considered essential for human prize fighters, make biotin unavailable for a dog's body and the regular use of raw eggs may cause dermatitis, loss of hair and a poor rate of growth in a dog. Also remember that dogs cannot survive on table scraps alone, it is considered poor dog nutrition. He or she must be given a balance that is suitable and a dog diet must not be confused with a human one.

What your dog needs is a healthy, balanced diet and one which he enjoys. A healthy dog food diet should have a ratio of 40% meat, 50% vegetables and about 10% grain or other carbohydrates. Try choosing pet food that is as close to this ingredient ratio and please don't try to economize by buying unknown brands of food. A premium brand of dog food is more likely to contain better quality material and less fillers, which is important for both dog and puppy growth and development. An ideal and healthy dog food diet cannot be vegetarian. In many communities across the world, meat and fish are forbidden and hence they also feed their dogs vegetarian diets. Unfortunately, this is not a healthy alternative for dogs, although many claim that it is better for humans to stick to a vegetarian diet.

Dogs are carnivores by nature and need animal protein. Although they can and do survive on a dog diet which is wholly vegetarian, they will not achieve the best of health if they do not get some meat in their diet. Let us suggest a method to you. First look around at the available pet foods manufactured by dog food companies. Ensure that three of the first five ingredients listed on the label is a form of meat protein. These days, most dog food companies offer samples. Take home these samples and let your dog taste them. Whichever one gives him the most satisfaction - and if you know your dog well, you will be able to tell the dog diet that suits him best.
