Dog Doors

If your dog is a free spirit, dog doors can be a necessity.  Many dogs enjoy the freedom of having uncontrolled entry and exit to and from your home.  Also, many dogs like to spend time in your bedroom at night, but like to be able to roam about the house before you rise in the morning.  If you can't keep your bedroom door open for your dog, a dog door on an interior door is an excellent option.

Many dog owners love dog doors, because it not only gives their dog freedom, but it gives them freedom too.  Their schedules are no longer constricted because of having to be around to let a dog outside.  With a dog door, the dog can take themselves outside and back inside.

If you are going to get a dog door, you can either install it yourself or have someone experienced do it for you.  Generally, dog owners will install dog doors themselves, as it saves money.  Installing dog doors is relatively easy if you follow the instructions.  Your dog is sure to appreciate your labor of love.

Once your dog door is installed, make sure you teach your dog how to use it.  It can help to demonstrate that the door moves easily, and perhaps offer a dog treat from the other side of the door, to help your dog test it out.  You shouldn't expect your dog to know how the dog door works without help, but sometimes that happens.  If your yard or outdoor area is not fenced off, you should not install a dog door.  Your dog should only walk around in public on a leash, or in a dog park with supervision.  That will protect your dog and your neighbors from potential harm.

Dog gates are a great option for homes that often have open doors.  If your dog is used to having the run of the place, and you need him or her to be contained for a short time, consider investing in dog gates.  Dog gates are contraptions that block a dog from passing through a doorway.  If you get the correct size of dog gate, your dog will not be able to jump over it.  Many dog owners prefer using dog gates to simply closing doors, as dog gates allow the dog to see through it, and thus not feel locked away.
