Dog Mating

Embarrassment usually accompanies the mention of dogs and mating amongst most people, but the true dog lovers know that mating dogs is not only an essential part of the life cycle of dogs, but it is an activity which is best approached in a rational way. You must realize that the reproductive process is common to all mammals and it is up to you, if you are a caring dog owner, to ensure that dog mating is carried out in time so that the biological needs of your dog are fulfilled.

The first point that you have to remember about dog mating is that both the dog and the bitch should be at least two years old before they are bred. They will not be physically and psychologically ready for parenting before that, especially the mother. However, apart from the physical aspect of the process, there must be a good deal of planning that you should be carrying out if you have a mating dog in your household. You should be working out in your mind what you will be doing with the resultant puppies even before you think of dog mating. You surely do not want a litter of pariahs which no-one wants and which will not get the care and attention that every puppy is entitled to. You should take your mating dog to a veterinarian for a comprehensive health examination before the breeding process. He will tell you whether your dog has any genetic defects which he could pass on to the puppies. Whether your dog is the stud or the bitch, he/she must be checked out for brucellosis, a sexually transmitted disease in dogs which results in the puppies being born dead. So even before you start the process of dog mating, it is imperative that you pay a visit to the veterinarian to have your dog medically examined. Knowing the breed and health of the of the dogs will go a long way in determining future puppy weight and overall health of the dog.

Next, you should be aware of the reproductive systems of dogs before you embark on dog mating. This way, you will be aware of the technicalities involved in dogs and mating without getting influenced by the social aspect of the breeding. Female dogs generally go through 2 reproductive cycles each year, a process that begins at puberty. The cycle starts with bloody vaginal discharge which may go on for 4-8 days. After the discharge stops, the female will have a period of sexual receptivity, commonly termed as being "in heat", which generally lasts for 7-10 days. While "on heat", the female will be very interested in males and will wander around trying to find them. She will urinate frequently to make the males aware of her presence and will display flirt-ish behavior with the males she prefers. She will make her intentions quite clear by lifting her tail and presenting her backside to them. Males are more promiscuous and are not as particular as to who they breed with.

Dog mating is quite a spectacular act and, after it is over, the male and female are often "stuck" together. This is quite natural and may even be necessary for successful dog mating. If the dog mating is successful, the puppies should be born in approximately 63 days.
