Dog Names
When dog's names are concerned, you can be as creative and wild as you like. On the plus side, if you shackle your pup with a strange or absurd moniker, he or she won't know the difference! There are however, a few things to keep in mind. You also want to avoid choosing a name that is similar to the commands you will be using on your dog - this will confuse him or her terribly.
The most popular dog names tend to be simple, short, and different from common words and phrases you use in your home. According to an online poll, the top three male dog names are Max, Buddy and Bailey, and the three most popular female dog names are Maggie, Molly, and Daisy. Because male dogs tend to be more aggressive than females, males tend to have military or sports inspired names (like Captain or Quarterback). Another popular tactic with male and female dogs are names based on appearance. Dogs with heavy coats become "Shaggy", gray dogs become "Smoky" and, quite possibly the most popular, dogs with spots become "Patches" or "Spot". Your dog's individual personality can be a great inspiration for a name as well. Hyper dogs can be called "Spazz", calm dogs "Mellow", aggressive dogs can be named "Pouncer". If your dog isn't abundant with personality, try giving him or her a film or television-themed name. Sci Fi enthusiasts, for example, have named their dogs Spock, Dr. Who, Jedi, Yoda, and Chewbacca. If you like the classics, try Dirty Harry or Scarlett O'Hara. Some people name their dog according to its' breed.
The possibilities are endless - just think about your favourite characters from past and present, and try to come up with a name that fits your dog's characteristics. As a dog owner, you are going to play a big role in your dog's development, so you may want to pick a name that reflects your creativity as well as your dog's personality. Take a good look at your pup. What are her mannerisms? Is she a friendly dog (Sunny)?, or is she shy (Mousie)? Is your dog adventurous (Bravery)? or is she timid (Coy)? Does she prefer to sleep all day (Sleeping Beauty)? Food themed-names are particular popular for female dogs - like Cupcake, Muffin, and Peaches. If you'd prefer something a little more unique, try Brie, Orzo (a delicious Italian pasta), Coca, or Truffle. Before deciding upon a name, sit down with your dog and take a good look at her, and relax. Remember, your dog will always love you, regardless of the name you choose for her!
Choosing a name for your dog is a great opportunity to flex your creative muscle. Try to pick something lighthearted and fun - and make sure it is something you won't mind using over and over again for years to come. The name you choose for your dog will be a reflection of his personality, and yours as well. And remember, your doggy loves and appreciates you. Keep that in mind when you're selecting his or her name!
