Dog Separation Anxiety

It is more than likely that you have heard about separation anxiety in humans. This could mean if you have spent a large amount of time with someone, you can start to feel very sad or alone when that person is not around, even if it's just for a little bit of time. However, dog separation anxiety is about ten times worse. Dogs are very loving towards their masters and will do anything to make their master happy and protect them. So when you leave your dog home alone, the separation anxiety in dogs grows to very high levels. In fact, dog and owner separation anxiety can even cause the dog to act out. Many of you may have already noticed this if you have a puppy that likes to chew on things while you are gone. However, now we are going to talk about dog separation anxiety and why they do what they do. Not only that, we are going to talk about things to look for to identify separation anxiety in a dog.

Before we go any further, it's important to point out that dog separation anxiety is something that can be found in pretty much any dog. That is because they have so much love for their masters. However, not all dogs are going to act on their dog and owner separation anxiety every time you go out. So first things first, finding out what dogs are going to have the dog separation anxiety. Usually this is something that you can find out when they are a puppy. When they are a puppy, they are a lot more willing to act out when they are mad that you left them. Truth be told, that is what is happening during separation anxiety in dogs. They are going to act out to show that they are displeased that you left them. This means that the dog (if it's an older dog) will do things that it knows you get mad at it for. Just like a kid might act out against its mom and dad. A puppy, however, is going to go around and rip up things that may smell like you, because it reminds them of you. It becomes very hard for them to understand why you left them. They may even do things like pee on the floor. Teaching your puppy to not behave like this when you are gone is all part of proper puppy training.

Dog separation anxiety is, luckily, something that most dogs grow out of. Usually it's something that they act out against more when they are young, because they do not know how to deal with you leaving. The real question is going to be, can you deal with the dog until it grows out of this phase? Most of the time people get rid of their dogs before they can get over their dog separation anxiety attacks. You have to understand that the dog does not know how to act when you are gone. That is because it's mad at you, but it still loves you. Thus, it gets an anxiety attack, because it's confused. However, as soon as you get home, this problem goes away. Now the real question you have to ask yourself is, can you deal with your dog's separation anxiety?
