Female Dog Names

Naming your dog is a big job, but relax - it isn't as tough as choosing a name for a human baby! When dog's names are concerned, you can be as creative and wild as you like. If you shackle your pup with a strange or absurd moniker, she won't know the difference, nor will she get mad at you about it. Have fun with the process - almost anything goes. Just make sure you pick a name that you will like hearing (and saying) over and over, day after day, year after year. Some names start out cute, but can quickly become annoying (like the pet owner I once read about, who named her dog "Poops"). You also want to avoid choosing a name that is similar to the commands you will be using on your dog. For example, if you name your dog "Stan" and you are trying to command the poor animal to "stand", you might run into problems. Dogs are smart animals, but they have their limits. When you talk to your dog, make sure you use clear communication, and that you choose a name that is not closely related to other words used in your home.

Popular Female Dog Names

According on an online poll, the three most popular female dog names are Maggie, Molly, and Daisy - but you can do better than that! Just like you, your dog has a unique personality, so choose a name that reflects her individuality. Some people like to name their dog based on their colouring, so white dogs become "Snowballs" and grey dogs become "Smokys". Many female dogs don food-themed names - like Muffin, or Cupcake, Bon Bon, or Peaches. Popular names tend to be short, usually one or two syllables. This is probably best - you don't want to be using a ridiculously long name like "Smoky Muffin Cupcake" five to ten times a day for the next twelve years!

Unique Female Dog Names

In my opinion, choosing a unique name for you pup is the best way to go. As an owner, you are going to play a big role in your dog's development, so you may want to pick a name that reflects you as well as your dog. Take a good look at your pup. What are her mannerisms? Is she a friendly dog (Cheery)? or is she shy (Pipsqueak)? Is your dog adventurous (Scout)? or is she timid (Mouse)? Does your dog like to play (Pouncer)? or does she prefer to sleep all day (Dreamer)? Perhaps your dog is more of a Spazz, or maybe she is so beautiful that you find her Sinful. If you'd like to continue the food theme but would prefer something more unique, look toward exotic foods. Miso, the traditional Japanese food, would make an adorable name, as would Brie, Truffle, or, if you're into Italian food, try naming her Orzo or Pipette. If all else fails, hit the Internet. It's a great resource - there are thousands of websites dedicated to unique and popular dog names. Just relax and have fun. Remember, your dog will always love you, regardless of the name you choose for her!
