Choosing the best types of guard dogs is no easy task. So before you can start looking at the best guard dogs, you have to know what a guard dog really is. These dogs are also sometimes called watch dogs. Pretty much, these are dogs that are trained to be a guard against unwanted people or animals in the area. Some of these dogs are made to attack, and other trained guard dogs are there to just watch out for and warn people when someone is in an area when they are not suppose to be. The dogs that are there to just warn people are known as bark dogs. Either way, all guard dogs are there to alert their masters of intruders and sometimes take care of an intruder. A lot of times trained guard dogs know that their bark can be worse than their bite. That is why they use their bark to try and scare people away. Of course, if that does not work, a lot of guard dogs are trained to attack. The funny thing is, a lot of guard dogs are the sweetest dogs you can have when it comes to their own people and kids. These dogs are just trained to be protective over their owners and kids. For some reason, it is also noted that guard dogs are more protective over females than males. This just could be animal nature.
Some guard dogs scare off intruders and some scare off predators, like other animals (wolves). Whether the dog is protecting your home or your livestock, you need to know what dogs will do the best job. A lot of well known breeds of dogs, such as the Rottweilers, make great guard dogs. However, these dogs have been given a bad name. Many people say these dogs are mean and will hurt anyone. Of course, these dogs are usually sold as family dogs. Rottweilers even make great dogs for kids, and would not hurt a hair on their head. If you want a dog like a Rottweilder to not be a guard dog, then all you have to do is have it around a lot of other people and animals while it is growing up. Other good dogs for guard dogs are Dobermans.
They say that a long time ago a new type of dog came out of trying to breed watch dogs. These dogs were known as mastiff. These dogs were bred to be guard dogs, but turned out to be gentle giants. Such dogs as the Great Dane and the Irish wolfhound fall under this category. As you can tell by the size of these dogs, they were bred to be huge and mean. However, they say that the Great Dane, although it's the largest of all dogs, is so sweet that it would not hurt a fly. That is why a lot of people choose Great Danes now as just a family pet instead of a guard dog. They say that Great Danes also love children more than anything else. It is uncertain why, but these dogs will follow the little kids to keep an eye on them. They think this has something to do with the watch dogs that were used to breed them.
