Responsible dog ownership means knowing not only how to spot a potential health problem, but how to treat the dog or puppy when they are ill or injured. Acting quickly on minor health problems, can be the difference in your animal’s health.
The Role of the Veterinarian in Your Dog’s Health Care Program Not all problems can be addressed by owners, and having the knowledge of a professional is essential. Your veterinarian will not only be responsible for helping when the dog is sick, but, for a number of other services as well, which include:
• Vaccinations: Puppies should receive their puppy shots up to the age of one and then every three years a booster. Vaccinations are performed to prevent various diseases in the animal, such as rabies, canine distemper, hepatitis, and parvo virus. Another responsibility of the vet is to castrate or puppy spay, should you decide to have your dog neutered.
• Puppy Spay / Castrate: If you are not breeding your dog, then it definitely should be neutered. Neutering the animal is also a health benefit to the animal as it helps to prevent many serious health problems in the dog.
• Flea Control / Worming: Fleas and worms can make a dog terribly uncomfortable, and is a big health issue in dogs. The dog should be treated by its veterinarian who will recommend a suitable solution for worming and flea control.
• Yearly Visit: Each year, your dog should be seen for a routine visit by your vet. During this visit, a wellness test should be scheduled which is simply a series of test that are performed to ensure your pet is in good health.
• Emergencies: Vet visits due to an emergency, such as a car accident, are the hardest of all visits. However, emergency visits are another role of your veterinarian.
How to Help to Ensure Your Dog’s Health Aside from regular veterinary care, it is also essential that you have a home health maintenance program for your pet. With regular health maintenance, you are being proactive in your dog’s health and you will help to prevent major health problems from arising.
Your regular health care maintenance program should include:
• Good nutrition
• Bathing and grooming
• Brushing
• Regular inspection which includes inspecting the dog’s body, ears, teeth and gums, and feet and nails
When a health care maintenance program is part of your dog’s health care, you are able to prevent many illnesses for becoming major catastrophes. For instance, when you are inspecting your dog, gently rubbing your hands over his body will alert you to any tender spots, cuts, lumps, and so on.
Exercise is another important aspect in your dog’s health as exercise not only gives your dog the physical activity that they require, but also stimulates the dog mentally, which is essential to keep your dog healthy.
Lastly, love cannot be stressed enough. All animals need love in order to be truly healthy. A loving owner will take the time to obedience train, care for the dog, and make sure that the dog is living in a safe environment.
