History of the Bernese Mountain Dog
The Bernese (another ancient breed) disappeared in the late 1800's. In the 1930's many breeders bred for increased size and guarding ability. This left a trait of temperamental unreliability in certain lines of the breed which can lead to unprovoked aggression. They can trace their ancestry to the Roman invasion of Switzerland over 2,000 years ago. The Mastiffs of Rome were crossed with the native flock-guarding dogs, this produced a breed that was able to withstand the severe weather.
