This dog is known for its courage and excellent guard abilities. The bulldog got its name from not only its robust look of a little bulldog, but also its power to attack bulls in arena combat before it was officially prohibited by the nineteenth century.

The term "bulldog" was first used around 1500[1] and might have been applied to various ancestors of modern bulldog breeds. In the 1600s[2], bulldogs were used for bullbaiting, a wagering sport popular in the 17th century in which trained bulldogs leapt at a bull lashed to a post, latched onto its snout and attempted to suffocate it.
