The Catahoula Leopard Dog evolved in the Southern part of the United States, and most likely descends from war dogs (mastiff and grey hound types) that the dogs belonging to Native Americans and the Spaniards brought there. In 1979, the breed was designated the state dog of Louisiana. These dogs were sometimes used to trail tree raccoons but haven now mainly moved to driving and rounding hogs and cattle.
