The name "Brumby" is thought to derive from James Brumby who was a Ferrier and arrived in Britania in 1791. It is thought he was responsible for some horses being brought to the early Australian colony. Upon James's move to Tasmania in 1804, the question was asked when leaving his horses behind, "Who do these horses belong to"? One replied, "They are Brumby's". This is mere speculation about the names origin.
The Brumby is also known for its ability to do damage on a farm, such as overgrazing and fence trampling. There is a rather large number of this breed in existence today.
