Normally needs only weekly brushing, but brush more frequently in spring and summer, when dog sheds heavily. Bathe once a month or as needed: The white coat contains natural oil that repels soil, and this breed does not have the odor problems of many longhaired breeds, so bathing is not required as often as one might think.
They \"blow\" their coats twice a year, once in May or June to shed their winter undercoat and once in November or December to shed their summer coat. Many Eskie owners use an undercoat rake, a tool available at most pet stores, for grooming.

The American Eskimo's keen wit and gentle temperament make it an excellent, obedient dog. It learns quickly. While playful with children, it will bark aggressively to announce intruders. The Eskie enjoys cold weather better than warm, but is adaptable to almost any region. As long as it is near to its family, it will be happy either in an apartment or on a farm. |

History |
|
|
Among the oldest dog breeds, American Eskimo belongs to the group of northern sled dogs that descended from the peat dog, a breed that lived among the New Stone Age lake dwellers. Remains of these dogs, dating back 6000 years, have been found in the Soviet Union, Finland, Lapland, Germany, and Scandinavia. The strong hunting instinct of most Nordic breeds has been replaced in the American Eskimo by a guarding ability. |

The American Eskimo Dog is a breed of companion dog originating in the United States of America (probably in New York City) in the twentieth century. The breed was formerly called a German Spitz or an \"American Eskimo Spitz\". It is a member of the Spitz family of dogs. It achieved a high degree of popularity in the 1930s and 1940s in the U.S. as a circus performer. The very first dog to walk a tightrope was an American Eskimo. The breed became popular as circuses would sell the puppies during their travels across the nation. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1994 and set the current standard for the breed. The United Kennel Club had recognized the breed long before 1994, and there is no difference between the two breed standards.
