The first American Cocker Spaniel arrived in the United States in 1620 with Pilgrims on the Mayflower. All Spaniels were originally classified together but in 1946 they were finally recognized as a separate breed. The name "Cocker" comes from the woodcock. This is a game bird that these spaniels flushed particularly well. |
