History:
The Rottweiler is thought to be a descendent of the Italian Mastiff. The breed was used as a herd dog during the Middle Ages. The name is derived from the town of Rottweil in Wurttemberg Germany.
Personality:
The Rottweiler has a mellow temperament. This breed is highly intelligent. The dog is loyal and has been used successfully in police, military, and customs work over many centuries. This breed needs a lot of companionship and human interaction to be truly happy.
Grooming:
The Rottweiler's smooth, glossy coat is easy to groom. Brush the coat when necessary with a firm bristle brush. Bathe the dog only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder.
Cautions:
Because of their size, obedience training should begin as a puppy - while the dog is still small, and great care should be taken to ensure that the dog is not made vicious.
Physical Accommodations:
The Rottweiler needs plenty of exercise. Running and playing in the open country keeps this breed in top shape most emotionally and physically. |
