Good diet, lots of exercise, and regular vet visits will prevent many of the aging affects on your pet. Older pets also require a special formulated food that will be easier to digest and better on their older systems. Some pets require special medications as they age and many vets have helpful suggestions on ways to lessen the cost of these or even find some formulas that are human products that work well for your canine partners.

Crating isn’t that bad really

People have mixed feelings about crating their beloved pet while they are away at work or at nights to sleep. Some people become very upset at the mere thought of a dog being crated; it’s so inhumane they may say. This isn’t and doesn’t have to be the case. As a matter of fact crating your pooch has many advantages without the adverse effects that people seem to think that comes with it. You may be surprised to know that some dogs actually like their crates, and find comfort from daily stresses by taking refuge in their crates. Here are some reasons why crating isn’t that bad really:

It gives your dog a place to call his own. Many people that have dogs and crate them will notice that as their dog gets used to the crate he or she will begin to horde all his “treasures” in his crate. As they get tired many will head to their crate without prompting from their owners for their nap. Dogs like having a spot they know is theirs and their alone.

Excellent for housebreaking. As many people may have experienced the puppy pee pads do not always work, neither does scolding or slapping the pup. Time and again you will see crating your dog as a way to housebreak them is by far the easiest and quickest way.

You know dog is safe while you’re gone. While at first it may seem cruel when you really think about it there are a lot of dangerous things your dog can and will get into while left home alone. When your dog is crated while you are at work you are ensuring his safety with the added bonus of ensuring your sofa cushions will be intact when you get back. There are a variety of large dog crates that give your dog plenty of room to move around and be comfortable in. Crating doesn’t mean that your dog is banished to a dark small box, if given a comfortable amount of room and some of his favorite toys you will find your dog is quite pleased to be in his crate when you’re gone. That’s not to mean he won’t cause a fuss when you first introduce him to his new retreat. He’s not going to be overly pleased he’s going from having the run of the house all day and night to being confined to a smaller home. Once he is used to it the crate, which happens rather fast in most cases, he will ultimately become happier that he has his “own special space”.
