Often times new puppies come with no instruction manual and it is left up to the new owner to figure out the best way to take care of this new arrival. Many books are available for breed specific dogs, and some just help hints and tips on how to raise a healthy happy pet. We here at Animaroo have compiles some of the more common easy tips to help you make it through the first few days while you cram all the puppy knowledge you can into your memory. Always remember if it is on the ground a puppy has access and they do not know that the cord to the laptop is not a new chew toy. Try to keep things like cords that are out of site to you but accessible to them out of reach. Use plastic ties to gather them and place them high out of reach as much as possible. The same goes for things like school books for you or your children. Books have a natural smell because of the wood used to create them. This makes them along with assignments that were worked on paper smell just like a natural treat for a puppy. Keep them out of reach. Keep a schedule of “break times” for when you take your new puppy out. Make it a set amount of time between each break slowing increase the increment of time every two months. This will allow the puppy to slowing increase the amount of time his or her body needs to go out.

Breaking Bad Dog Habits & Behaviours

If your puppy has started a bad habit breaking the habit as quickly as possible is the best alternative. The longer the habit is not address the harder it will become to prevent or break that habit. Other ways to break bad habits is to not encourage them in the first place. Some pet owners see a new puppy chewing on a shoe as a toy and thinking it will detour the puppy from chewing on the shoes they want to keep, they give the puppy an old shoe to chew on instead. Puppy’s and dogs alike are not able to differentiate between the shoes that are ok to chew and ones that are not ok to chew. They just get used to the scent and know a shoe is ok to chew on. Prevention of this habit would be best served by giving the puppy something completely different in smell and look for the puppy to associate as an ok thing to chew on as a toy.

Being excited about owning your own pet is normal, and expecting them to naturally act the way you want them to also normal. Training your pet can be very stressful and many people know training will require a lot of time and patience. Depending on the type or breed of animal will depend on how well it learns. Some breeds are more intelligent than others and pick up very quickly. There may be more you want to train your pet other than where to use the restroom. Taking the time to train them how to fetch, roll-over, sit, and hand signals are good. Not only are you training them, but you are giving them quality time as they need.

Often new pet owners wonder when a new puppy breaks all of its bad habits and becomes an adult dog. It’s sad to say that each dog is much like us, and there is no exact time depending on how well they are trained as puppy. It is worth the time and effort when a puppy is younger to break them of all the bad habits so as your puppy ages your companion becomes better trained and less difficult. The old saying of “we must crawl before we can run” also applies to our pets even though some of us want our new puppy to come pre-trained. Take your time and be consistent and in the end you will be the happy owner of a well behaved and extremely loving animal.

Battle of the Sexes

In the decision making process of picking that perfect new puppy to your family, not only is there the breed decision but the sex decision. Do I want a boy or do I want a girl? Should it really matter or are the benefits to one or the other? Well, the answer is that there are benefits and disadvantages to both. The real question is who the new pet will pick to belong to. Some breeds pick one individual in the family and make that lasting connection with that one person. In most cases a male dog will pick a female human, and vice verse. So if you want to stack the cards in your favor so to speak it is best to choose a puppy of the opposite sex as yourself. Even though this is not a guarantee it does help you to have a pet that could end up choosing you over your spouse/significant other. And lets face it, it really is the pet that chooses us even though we are the one that brings them home.

Every little puppy starts our delicate and moves straight to invincible (well at least they think so). Letting your toddler pup learn the hard knocks of life can be stressful, but in some cases necessary. Let him try to jump off the couch on his own. He will know when it is safe. He will always try to carry the toy that is too big or the stick that dwarfs his small stature, and it is good for him. It gives him confidence, and makes him stronger. Just don’t let him play in the street. Dodging cars is not a game any animal should learn to play.

Is your little boy or girl trying to tell you something with negative behavior. We all get busy in life and all to often the first one to notice our absence is our pet. When it is time to play and you are not there your little guy will be more than wiling to let you know how upset he or she is with negative actions. Inside accident, eaten shoes, and far worse torn furniture can be the result of the lack of attention. Even if it is just a short walk around the house break the monotony for that little one and show them some attention. It will cost you less in the long run both physically and financially.

It’s nice to see the youthfulness a pet can bring out in the older individuals in society today. The pep in their walk as they take their dog for a walk, the small on their face when they see Sparky sitting by the window waiting for them as they come home.To imagine a life without their best friend would be almost intolerable.Dogs have the ability to almost human like with expressions and actions. Some breeds are almost child like with behavior. They like to play with their toys, and have a favorite one to chew on.They have a favorite place to nap and a favorite place to hide their treats. They even pick the same couch cushion to hide the treats in every time. Some elderly people go as far as catering their life around the needs of a pet just to feel connected to something. The miracle behind the connection we feel at any age to a dog is strong and hard to break.
