Bedlington Terrier

The Bedlington Terrier has a life expectancy of 11 to 16 years.

Origin
The Bedlington Terrier originated in the Bedlington Mining Shire of Northumberland, England, during the early 1800s. The true ancestry of the Bedlington Terrier is unknown, but the breed is believed to be made up of some combination of the Rothberry Terrier, Otterhound, Whippet, Kerry Blue Terrier and Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier.

The Bedlington Terrier was developed to hunt vermin, rabbits, fox and other animals. Their coal miner owners would also race them against the Whippet.

Size
The Bedlington Terrier weighs 17 to 23 pounds and measures 15 to 17.5 inches.

Grooming Needs
The Bedlington Terrier has a curly, wooly coat that can make them appear more like a lamb than a dog. The Bedlington Terrier does not shed much, but requires a weekly brushing and regular trips to the groomer every six to eight weeks for a trim.

Like all dogs, the Bedlington Terrier also needs basic grooming. Brush their teeth, clean their ears and trim their nails on a regular basis.

The Bedlington Terrier is calm and affectionate.

Temperament
The Bedlington Terrier is more friendly and easygoing than many other terrier breeds. The Bedlington Terrier likes to play and entertain, but is not highly energetic or prone to mischief. The Bedlington Terrier adores people and is happiest when around them and involved in their activities. Bedlington Terriers are especially fond of children and get along quite well with them.

The Bedlington Terrier loves to give and receive affection. However, this adoring breed still makes an effective protector. When it comes to watching over their family, the Bedlington Terrier displays more of the classic terrier traits. The Bedlington Terrier is bold, alert and quick to take on any challenger.

Training Needs
The Bedlington Terrier has a stubborn streak, but is generally obedient. The Bedlington Terrier responds best to a firm, confident leader and lots of praise. They are especially sensitive to harsh correction and should always be treated with kindness. Once trained in the basics, Bedlington Terriers can go on to participate in earthdog trials, agility, and obedience.

Activity Level
The Bedlington Terrier loves to play and enjoys exercise. While fairly laidback in the home, the Bedlington Terrier comes alive outside.  The Bedlington Terrier needs a long daily walk as well as regular time in a secure yard to run and romp.
