Origin

The Boerboel emerged in the mid-1600s in South Africa thanks to a man named Jan van Riebeeck. He and his family arrived in the Cape of South Africa in 1652 with a large, Mastiff-type dog known as “Bullenbitjer.” The Bullenbitjer was bred with native dogs as well as dogs that traveled with the French, Dutch and British settlers of the area. The result was the Boerboel or “farmer’s dog.”  The Boerboel’s primary purpose was to protect farmers, their families and their land.

Size

The Boerboel weighs 100 to 175 pounds and measures 22 to 27 inches.

Grooming Needs

The Boerboel has a short, thick coat that just needs to be brushed once a week and bathed when dirty. Like all dogs, the Boerboel also needs basic grooming. Brush their teeth, clean their ears and trim their nails on a regular basis.

Character

The Boerboel is a highly devoted and confident guardian.

Temperament

The Boerboel was bred to be a watch dog and retains those strong protective instincts. The Boerboel is bold and fearless with a naturally dominant personality. They are territorial and quick to defend their family and property. Boerboels need early socialization and training or they may exhibit aggressive behavior when challenged.

With their family, the Boerboel is gentle and even docile. They bond closely with their family and are surprisingly sensitive to their moods.

Training Needs

The Boerboel is easy to train with the right kind of leader. The Boerboel wants to be the dominant member of the household and needs an experienced handler who is firm, strong and confident. Boerboels are bright and can be obedient with proper training and socialization. Once they have the basics down, Boerboels can go on to participate in rally, weight pulling, agility and advanced obedience.

As part of their training, the Boerboel also needs early socialization. A well-socialized Boerboel will become skilled at differentiating between friend and foe when it comes to protecting their family.

Activity Level

Some large breeds can be rather lazy, but the Boerboel is athletic and agile. Boerboels require a moderate amount of activity and like to use their minds as well as their bodies. The Boerboel should have a long daily walk and regular time outside in a secure area to run around and play games of fetch.
