Fox Terrier Smooth Breed Information

Fox Terrier Smooth

The Fox Terrier Smooth has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Origin
The Fox Terrier Smooth emerged in England, possibly as far back as the 18th century and was developed to go to ground to bolt foxes from their hiding places. Up until 1984, the Fox Terrier Smooth and Fox Terrier Wire were considered to be one breed. However, evidence now shows that the breeds came from very different sources. The Fox Terrier Smooth most likely descended from the smooth coated Black-and-Tan Terrier, Bull Terrier, Greyhound and Beagle whereas the Fox Terrier Wire counts the rough coated Black-and-Tan Terrier as their ancestor.

Size
The Fox Terrier Smooth weighs 15 to 23 pounds and measures 15.5 to 18 inches.

Grooming Needs
The Fox Terrier Smooth has a short, sleek and thick coat that sheds moderately throughout the year. The Fox Terrier Smooth should be brushed twice a week and bathed occasionally.  Like all dogs, the Fox Terrier Smooth also needs basic grooming. Brush their teeth, clean their ears and trim their nails on a regular basis.

Character
The Fox Terrier Smooth is active and clownish.

Temperament
The Fox Terrier Smooth has a bold, outgoing personality and loves to be the center of attention. The Fox Terrier Smooth is always on the go, playing with toys or running around the house. They have a mischievous streak and a zest for life.

The Fox Terrier Smooth thrives on affection from their family and is quite loyal to them. The Fox Terrier Smooth makes a great watchdog and will bark when anything or anyone appears to be a threat to their family or home. However, the Fox Terrier Smooth is not aggressive, only protective. Once they get to know someone, they are typically quite friendly and welcoming.

Training Needs
Although they have a bit of stubborn streak, the Fox Terrier Smooth is easily trainable. The Fox Terrier Smooth responds best to consistency and a firm, but kind leader. Even with the best training, however, the Fox Terrier Smooth may never break certain habits – namely digging, barking and chasing – that many terrier breeds retain.

As part of their training, the Fox Terrier Smooth also needs early socialization. They tend to be dominant and bossy with other dogs if not well socialized.

Activity Level
The Fox Terrier Smooth is highly energetic and loves a good workout. The Fox Terrier Smooth should have a long daily walk as well as regular time outside in a secure area to romp, play and chase balls. They also do well as jogging and swimming companions.
