Havachon Breed Information and Facts

The Havachon is a playful and loving hybrid dog that loves company with a hypo-allergenic coat that makes it a great dog for families, elderly couples, or those with pet dander allergies. Let's take a closer look at the breed information and facts surrounding this pup.

 

 

Havachons are a hybrid dog originating from a cross between a Bichon Frise and a Havanese.  Most Havachon owners find that this unique hybrid tends to look more like a Bichon but carries more personality traits of the Havanese.  Not yet recognized as a breed with the AKC, the Havachon has grown in popularity over the past decade as their coloring has a wide range of possibilities and their non-shedding coat makes them a great dog for anyone with allergy issues.  

 

 

Havachons are a small dog by standard definitions.  On average, they range from 9-12 inches tall and weigh 10-15 pounds.  Depending on the genetic mix coming from a Havachon’s parents, its coat can range in length.  

 

 

As a long-haired dog, a Havachon will need regular grooming and trims to keep its fur healthy and shiny.  You will need to brush and clean your Havachon’s coat two times a week.  As your Havachon matures, make sure to get its coat trimmed and maintain a regular brushing and cleaning schedule every week.  Pay attention to where your dog’s fur grows faster and irritates them, and make sure to trim or pluck hotspots (paws, pads, ears, around the eyes) regularly.  As for shampoos, aim for any brand that will nourish your Havachon’s locks and pay attention to the natural oils in your dog’s skin.  Some Havachons are naturally less oily than others and may also require a conditioner as well.  

 

Apart from coat maintenance, a Havachon will also need to have its nails clipped regularly and ears checked on a bi-weekly basis. Their ear hair grows faster than most dogs and can tangle and cause nasty infections.

 

 

The Havachon is a smart dog, which can translate to both stubbornness and playfulness depending on the situation or its owners.  Overwhelming, though, they are very friendly and loving small dogs that make a great companion for children and elderly owners. 

 

 

Most Havachon owners find that their small hybrid dog is an energetic bundle of happy and intelligent energy.  Havachons enjoy playing, solving puzzles, being with a family, and exploring.  However, at times their intelligence will turn into stubbornness that can lead to them misbehaving.  While not natural leaders, if given enough leeway, a Havachon will assert itself as Alpha and ignore your lead.  Keep a calm and confident authority with your Havachon – both remaining strict with your commands but playful and present for everyday moments.

 

 

As Havachons are naturally curious and clever dogs, they will take easily to training both as young puppies and well into their adult years.  With a clear alpha in place, a Havachon will happily follow its owners lead and do its best to learn and listen to commands.  

 

 

A Havachon will need at least one long walk per day and ample amounts of play time – either in a fenced in yard, with other dogs, or in an open room indoors with toys or games to stimulate their mind. They have plenty of energy, so make sure you can commit to this level of activity.
