Saluki Breed Information

Saluki

The ancient Saluki has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Origin
The Saluki is believed to be the oldest domesticated dog breed. Evidence suggests that the Saluki existed as far back as 7000 B.C. in the Middle East. Dogs closely resembling the Saluki were depicted on tombs, carvings and other artifacts from the Sumerian Empire. The Egyptians especially treasured the Saluki as a royal dog and even mummified them like the Pharaohs.

The Arabs are thought to have bred the Saluki to hunt gazelles. They wanted a dog that had the necessary speed and stamina to track down and catch the incredibly fast prey. The Saluki is still referred to as the “Gazelle Hound” by some.

Size
The Saluki weighs 35 to 65 pounds and measures 23 to 28 inches.

Grooming Needs
The Saluki is a light shedder and naturally very clean and odor free. The Saluki’s smooth coat only needs to be brushed once a week and bathed when dirty. If being shown, the Saluki’s coat may also be trimmed.

Like all dogs, the Saluki needs basic grooming. Brush their teeth, clean their ears and trim their nails on a regular basis.

Character
The Saluki is reserved and dignified.

Temperament
The Saluki has a cat-like independence and disposition. The Saluki is aloof with strangers and tends to bond closely with just one or two family members. The Saluki is not known for being overly affectionate or playful. They are better described as sensitive and laidback. Salukis do not respond well to rough and tumble activity and are not an ideal match for families with youngsters.

Training Needs
The Saluki is highly intelligent, but not very obedient. Training the Saluki takes patience and a plenty of consistency. However, the Saluki can be trained, especially with positive reinforcement as this breed tends to be quite sensitive. Once the Saluki understands basic obedience, they can go on to compete in lure coursing as well as flyball, agility, racing and tracking.

Activity Level
The Saluki has lots of endurance and a natural athleticism. The Saluki was bred to be a runner and needs a secure space outside to stretch their legs and get a good sprint going. The Saluki should have a daily walk, but especially needs that outside time to run.
