Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Breed Information

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

The rambunctious Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Origin
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier’s true origins are lost in time, but the breed has been known in Ireland for the past 200 years. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was a working dog that served many purposes. They hunted vermin, badgers and foxes; protected property and people; and herded sheep and cattle.

Size
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier weighs 30 to 40 pounds and measures 17 to 19 inches.

Grooming Needs
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has a soft, silky coat that sheds very little. Although the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier does not shed much, they do need to be combed once a week. They should always be combed and never brushed as brushing will make their coat fuzzy.  Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers also require a trip to the groomers every four to six weeks for a trim. They should only be bathed when dirty.

Like all dogs, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier also needs basic grooming. Brush their teeth, clean their ears and trim their nails on a regular basis.

Character
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is friendly and exuberant.

Temperament
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is more easygoing than other terrier breeds. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is not as quick to scrap, although they will sound the alarm when a stranger approaches or the doorbell rings. They can also be territorial with other dogs and pets if not well socialized.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier adores people and is quite social. They live to have fun and maintain a puppy mentality for many years. Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are playful and affectionate. They do well with children and are especially protective of them.

Training Needs
Like most terrier breeds, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is strong willed and wants to be the one in charge. Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers require consistency and an owner who is firm, but gentle. Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are sensitive and will shut down if treated harshly. As part of their training, Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers also need early socialization with people and other dogs.

Activity Level
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is energetic, but not overly so. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier needs a daily walk and can be a good partner for jogs and hikes. They should also have regular time outside in a secure area to run around and play. However, Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are sensitive to heat and should never be over exercised in warm weather.
