When you hear of a Rhodesian Ridgeback, what do you think of? Well, you should think of a breed of dog that is indigenous to Southern Africa. When looking back on the history of Rhodesian Ridgebacks, you can see that their life can be traced way back to the pioneers of the Cape Colony (that is located in South Africa). It is said that the pioneers that came to Cape Colony actually mated their dogs with the very semi domesticated hunting dogs of the Khoisan people. This made a dog that was great at hunting, but still very domesticated. Soon this became a very popular breed all over the world.
Of course, the names of Rhodesian Ridgebacks have not always been the same. Over the years they have been called everything from an African Lion Hound to a Van Rooyen's Lion Dog. Some people even call the Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies African Lion dogs. However, how did it get that name? Well, it is said that a Rhodesian Ridgeback can actually keep a lion at bay while awaiting their master or masters to make a kill. This became very handy in Africa where lions are a big threat to the peoples' way of life. Now that we know a little bit more about the Rhodesian Ridgeback and some of the different names it has, it's time to talk a little bit more about the personality of the dog.

The good thing about these dogs is that they are very loyal and intelligent. This is a good combo for a dog to have. They love their owners and will do anything for them. However, they do not come up to strangers; they act a little aloof. The main thing to do is to not mark this aloofness with aggression. Doing that is going to make you miss judge the breed. Although, it should be noted that the Rhodesian Ridgeback is going to be a lot more likely to just ignore a stranger than fighting gone. This dog does not care to fight. It may like to hunt, but it does not want to fight humans.
So overall, you should note that the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a hunting dog. It is a very loyal dog, but from time to time it is going to get into mischief. That is just what this kind of dog is all about. Although these dogs have a very athletic exterior, it's important to know that they are very soft and sensitive on the inside. Normally this dog is said to live about nine to ten years. Of course, it really depends on what kind of care you give the dog. That is because dogs have been know to live up to 16 years or more. This is one of those dogs that you would able to count on. Although it is something that is not easy to understand, this kind of dog has a strong love for humans. Maybe one day we will find out why. Everyone loves these kinds of dogs. They are so pretty.
