There are two variations of this tiny, unique dog, both of which can be born in the same litter: the "Powder Puff", which has a soft, long coat of hair ranging in colours from white to black and can be solid or spotted, and the Hairless, which only has hair on its head, feet and tail - its body is completely bald. While the Chinese Crested is the most famous of the hairless breeds, it is still considered rare.

Measuring about 30 cm and weighing no more than 10 pounds, the Chinese Crested fits into the toy category. They are playful, affectionate dogs and require a lot of human interaction. Chinese Cresteds are real "lap" dogs - they adore hugging and attention, and become attached to their owners. Chinese Cresteds are OK with respectful, gentle children. Because they do not have hair to protect them they are vulnerable to injury, so roughhousing must be avoided. These dogs are suitable for life in an apartment. They require a sweater when outdoors in the cold (but avoid wool and lanolin - many Chinese Cresteds are allergic to these fabrics), and need sunscreen (SPF 25-30) when outdoors in the sun. The Chinese Crested is a relatively quiet dog as far as dog barking is concerned.

The Chinese Crested was developed in Africa, where it was called African Hairless Terriers. Ancient Aztecs used them to warm their beds (and as meals)! Chinese traders picked the dog up from Africa, using them on their ships to catch rats. It is here they adopted the name "Chinese Crested". They made their debut in the West in 1885, but weren't granted purebred status by the AKC until 1991.

Chinese Cresteds Because their skin is exposed, Chinese Cresteds are prone to skin problems and irritation. They are also prone to dental problems, so teeth should be well taken care of, and the Hairless variety tends to lose teeth as it ages. Feed this dog in moderation - it tends to overeat the dog pedigree.

Chinese Crested are active little dogs and require daily exercise. Dogs who are not provided with this tend to become moody and exert behavioural problems. They also enjoy the occasional romp in the park. If you have a large property, make sure it it is fenced in and reinforced. Chinese Cresteds love to dig and could eventually dig their way out of a fenced-in yard. The Powderpuff requires average dog grooming and frequent brushing, the Hairless does not require much care but does need oil rubbed into its skin from time to time. Neither type sheds much and the Hairless variety is a good option for dog allergy sufferers.

Chinese Crested Puppies

If you have purchased Chinese Crested puppies for sale or Chinese Crested for sale you need to make sure you make frequent visits to the vet during the first year of life for inoculations and checkups. After six years of age, vet visits should be bi-annually. Because they are so affectionate, it is best to buy Chinese Cresteds that have been properly socialized. Dogs who have spent the first few weeks of life in isolation have difficulty bonding with others later in life. Because of the popularity of this breed, make sure prospective breeders are reputable, and have all the appropriate paperwork.
