Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, or PBGV, has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Origin
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen emerged from France in the 16th century as a smaller version of the Griffin Vendeen. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen was bred to be a low-to-the-ground, hardy hunter that could manage rough terrain in the pursuit of rabbit, hare and other small prey.

Size
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen weighs 25 to 38 pounds and measures 13 to 15 inches.

Grooming Needs
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has a long harsh coat that sheds very lightly. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen’s coat has a naturally tousled appearance and only needs to be brushed once a week and bathed occasionally. Like all dogs, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen also needs basic grooming. Brush their teeth, clean their ears and trim their nails on a regular basis.

Temperament

However, this breed is not yippy or yappy and when they make noise, it is generally purposeful. As such, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens can make good watchdogs. They are confident and notice everything going around them. They are typically too welcoming to be effective guard dogs though; they may bark when someone new approaches, but will quickly warm up to them.

Training Needs
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is best suited to an experienced dog owner. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is stubborn and strong willed, and prefers to do things their own way. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is intelligent and eager to please, but needs a confident, firm leader. Once trained in the basics, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen can go on to participate in obedience, agility and tracking.

Activity Level
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is not a couch potato and likes to stay busy. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen makes a determined hunter and likes to play vigorously. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen needs a long daily walk as well as lots of playtime in a fenced area.
